In the period of sleep, breathing and heart rates slow down comparatively and our muscles relax. In the throat this results the soft palate, a small flap of skin, to turn into tissue that is limp and flaccid. It is this soft palate that rings in the airflow during the throat when you respire, causing the sound we know as snoring.
